District Lay Employment Secretary

Chester and Stoke-on-Trent District is looking for a Lead (known as District Lay Employment Secretary) for the Lay Employment Sub-Committee (LESC) (Volunteer Role).

The LESC Lead takes overall responsibility for the promotion of good employment practice within the District and will work closely with the other members of the LESC.

The role of the Lay Employment Lead is to:

  • Provide advice to circuit and church representatives on matters of employment
  • Oversee employment arrangements within the district
  • Consult and obtain the approval of the LESC as representatives of the District Policy Committee on recruitment of Lay employees recruited to fulfil a pastoral or youth ministry role
  • Check contractual documents prior to issue
  • Collaborate with the District administrator on the secure storage of accurate records
  • Receive information from Connexional HR as issues arise
  • Keep as well informed as possible on changes to employment law
  • Prepare the agenda for the LESC and check the minutes as recorded by the District administrator

It is estimated that the role requires between 3-7 hours per week.

The role would suit someone who has HR experience, who can make decisions as part of teams, who is able to keep a few plates spinning at once and who has an eye for detail. We are looking for someone sympathetic to the aims of the Methodist Church. Support from the Methodist HR team in London and our own local HR consultant would be available where required.

Please put in an expression of interest by the 31 July 2021 by email to Ruth Pickles, the current LESC Lead / District Lay Employment Secretary:
